Standards for Mathematical Practice - Online Training

(30 Hours)

 

This 30-hour course will have participants studying the eight Standards for Mathematical Practices and how these are used to describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn the “processes and proficiencies” to the Mathematical Practices.
  • Develop an understanding of rigorous instructional activities by creating descriptions of higher order thinking (Bloom's Taxonomy, Webb’s Depth of Knowledge, and/or Cognitive Demand) instructional activities aligned to each cognitive domain. Create a rigorous and relevant instructional objective that is both observable and measurable.
  • Analyze lesson plans and student work samples for levels of cognition and ways to increase rigor and assess Mathematical Practices.
  • Analyze standards inclusion into the lesson being developed.
  • Develop an understanding of relevant instructional activities and creating activities of higher-level cognitive uses aligned to Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS)
  • Receive peer feedback through a Peer Coaching protocol (i.e., Wows and Wonders) and revise instructional objective, based on feedback

Course Dates: November 6 – December 17, 2013
